With the new technology of high definition television (HDTV), make- up artists have to add the skills of airbrushing to their repertoire. Both HDTV and digital photography show every detail to the extreme. Therefore, standard make-up looks far too heavy and false in these mediums.

By using a compressor and airbrush gun, micronized make-up is dispersed so finely that, if applied correctly, it cannot be seen. It gives invisible coverage. There are several different formulas of foundation that can be used. Hydro (water base) gives a natural, dewy look and is most often used on the face. Silicone and alcohol base foundations are non-transferrable so they are good choices to cover tattoos, birthmarks and for use on areas where clothing may rub against the body. You should have two airbrush guns--one for hydro foundations and a separate gun for silicone makeup. If you use the same gun for both it will clog. It is time consuming to keep cleaning your gun and in this business time is money. Even the slightest residue will cause blockage resulting in the spray coming out in globules rather a micro mist. As a professional makeup artist you are expected to have two airbrush guns. Students can purchase a second gun at Award Studio at the student discount price.

The airbrush course at Award Studio provides you with techniques for using MAC silicone base and Kett Hydro base foundations. You will also learn to cover, do stenciling, mix colors for blush and eyeshadow and much more. These new skills are essential for every media make-up artist. You can also charge more for weddings when you do airbrushing.

Award Studio has created a program that combines the wisdom and techniques of top industry professionals in the field of high definition technology. We use Kett Cosmetics which was created by a television producer, in conjunction with a chemist and makeup artist. They produce the finest high resolution airbrush makeup available. We work with Iwata Medea duel action airbrush guns and compressors, which are the finest on the market for beauty application. We also use some airbrush products from MAC. Since we are not promoting one single brand, you learn how and why to use all the best airbrush products the industry has to offer. As the technology evolves we will continue to stay on the cutting edge of the airbrush industry.

If you are not already a certified media makeup artist you need to take our complete Media Makeup Artistry Course which covers many other aspects of camera makeup, as well as photo sessions for your portfolio and ways to market yourself. However, if you are currently working as a media makeup artist and just need to learn airbrushing so you can compete in the new realm of HD, you may enroll for the Airbrush Makeup Class alone. Please contact the director, Amy Ward, to discuss the details.

All the makeup you see here and throughout our website is done by students during class at Award Studio.
